Kidney Transplant

A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure where a healthy kidney from a living donor or a brain-dead donor is placed into a patient suffering from End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). This treatment offers patients a chance at a healthier and longer life when their kidneys lose about 90% of their function.

Types of Kidney Transplant-

Cadaveric Transplant: In this procedure, the kidney is received from a brain-dead organ donor. The recipient’s name is placed on a cadaver waiting list, and monthly blood samples are sent to the medical center to monitor antibody levels. The waiting period depends on the availability of a donor compatible with the recipient’s blood type.

Living Donor Transplant (Nephrectomy): Here, a kidney is surgically removed from a living donor. The procedure, often performed through Laparoscopic Nephrectomy (a minimally invasive surgery), uses advanced instruments to safely remove the donor kidney. Living donor transplants are further classified as:

Living-related donor – when the donor is biologically related to the patient.
Living-unrelated donor – when the donor is not related to the patient.
